The Poas Volcano National Park The Poas Volcano National park was established in 1971. It has become the most popular park in the Country of Costa Rica. It is located in the northwest region of the central valley. Approx 30 miles northwest of San Jose (about a 2 hour ride). The Volcano itself has a few different cones/craters, the main a cone has three sides. You can see into the main crater through a outlook post at the open end of the rim. There you can see the acid (sulfer-rich) lake at the bottom of the main crater. North of the active crater, the Von Frantzius cone is the oldest eruptive center at the top of the massif. Just southeast of the main crater you will find a colapsed cone filled by rainwater to form Botos Lake. Poas Volcano
