Volcano
Arenal
The Arenal volcano is located in the Province of
Alajuela
near the San Carlos Plains. It is a four hour winding drive from San
Jose and stands 1,633 meters high so it can be seen from far away.
For hundreds of years it sat undisturbed in the forest. In 1968 is erupted
violently and destroyed the village of Pueble Nuevo. It remains pretty
active today. On a regular basis the Arenal volcano erupts lava and ash
into the air. Curious visitors from around the world come to see its fiery
demonstrations.
If you are heading towards the Arenal volcano and
you go past the hot spings and down an unpaved road you will encounter
the private Arenal Observatory.
*NOTE: It is NOT
ADVISABLE TO CLIMB THE VOLCANO. Others have tried and were either
burn or killed (1988).
