Basics
Basic Functions
Input: devices to send information to the computer
(mouse, microphone, scanner, fax machine, digital camera,
Storage (memory):
Two types of memory, (a) temporary and (b) long-term.
(a) RAM (random Access Memory) is temporary and stores
information as you use it.
(b) Long-term memory stores information . Ex: Hard drives,
CD-Roms, USB cards, smart cards.
Processor: a microprocessor controls the computers'
functions. The microproccor contains millions of transistors which perform
millions of instructions per second. Instructions are carried out using
a three step process: fetch, decode, execute
Output: Information that has been processed is communicated
back to the user the the form of words, sounds or pictures, and is delivered
through printers, speakers, monitors or other output devices. Sometimes
output is just written back to a storage device.
Basic Components
Motherboard: The motherboard is a circuitboard that
holds the computers most important parts together and allows them to communicate
with one another.
Chips are made from Silicon

Digital Information
Software is made up of the programs and data that a computer
uses to do its job. At the most basic level, all software or digital communication
is the same: a series of ones and zeros, or binary-coded bits.
Computers use binary code becauswe they have no real concept
of numbers. As electrical machines, they "understand" only whether electricity
is off or on. Binary one is qequivalent to the presence of an electrical
charge, or on; binary zero is equivalent to the absence of a charge, or
off. All digital devices, including your compacdt disk player, represent
information this way.
